SWITCH TO A NATURAL DEODORANT

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

Why sweating is good and what to expect when you first switch to natural deodorant.

Firstly let's talk about the difference between deodorant and antiperspirant.

Antiperspirants and deodorants work differently in their ways of reducing body odour. Antiperspirants use aluminium which blocks sweat from exiting the body therefore keeping your body dry and preventing the unwanted body odour.

Deodorants on the other hand work to neutralise the smell of your natural body odour by masking it.

Sweating is good!

Your body was designed to sweat to regulate its temperature and its absence could contribute to overheating. We have millions of sweat glands in our body and little extra sweat is a good thing.

Even though we associate sweat with smell, sweat doesn't actually smell.

What causes the nasty odour is bacteria that grows on sweat throughout the day.

Aluminium works magic when preventing the odour however it does block your sweat glands completely which as we’ve mentioned is not that great.

What to expect when switching from antiperspirant to natural deodorant

When switching from an antiperspirant to a deodorant, you are removing the aluminium and the blocked waste is leaving your body. This process can be slightly unpleasant at first as it may contribute to releasing stronger and unusual body odour.

However it’s a natural process as part of our body's detox. So when you first make the switch and you’re sweating like mad and the odour is kinda strange it’s not that your natural deodorant isn't working, your body just needs to adjust.

This can take anywhere between 2-4 weeks and you can expect some excess sweating and bodily moisture.

What to look for when choosing your natural deodorant

Look for deodorants containing natural clays and/or starch, which will help absorb the excess moisture. Deodorant’s containing beeswax and natural butters such as shea/cocoa/mango have great soothing properties. Avoid fragrance if you can and instead look for essential oils like tea tree in the recipe which have great antibacterial properties.

Our deodorants are made with refreshing blends of antibacterial essential oils.

We use :

-Magnesium Hydroxide to neutralise odour instead of skin irritating baking soda.

- Arrowroot powder to help absorb the excess moisture

- Soothing combination of Beeswax, Hemp seed oil and natural butters.
